Who Is the D7 Visa Suitable For?
A D7 application is considered for people who can show a regular and sustainable source of income to live in Portugal and who plan to move their residence to Portugal. The basis of the application is not the generation of income linked to working in Portugal, but that the applicant has a financial structure that allows them to support themselves with their existing income.
Where active remote work or income from a foreign employer / client forms the basis of the application, the D8 Digital Nomad Visa should be assessed separately.
2026 Income Reference
Under Portuguese legislation, the minimum wage is used as the reference in assessing means of subsistence. For 2026, the monthly minimum wage in Portugal has been set at EUR 920. In family applications, the following references result from applying the per-person rates in the legislation:
- Main applicant: EUR 920 per month — EUR 11,040 per year
- Second and subsequent adults: EUR 460 per person per month — EUR 5,520 per year
- Children under 18 and dependent children: EUR 276 per person per month — EUR 3,312 per year
These amounts are legal references. In the application, the regularity, sustainability and documentability of the source of income, and its compatibility with the family structure, are assessed together. The consulate or the relevant authority may request additional financial documents depending on the characteristics of the file.
Which Income Can Be Considered in a D7 File?
In a D7 file, not only the amount of the income but also whether its source can be explained and is sustainable is important. Depending on the nature of the income, it may need to be supported by different documents.
For applicants who are company partners or managers, it must be examined separately whether the income structure is active salary income in return for personal labor, or income arising from partnership, dividends or investments. The passive, or own-income, residence logic of the D7 should be preserved; in files where an active remote work model predominates, the D8 option should be considered.
Key Elements of the Application
A D7 application does not consist of a single income document. The financial situation, accommodation in Portugal, bank and identity documents, and the applicant's settlement plan are assessed together.
Income and Financial Documents
The documents showing the source and regularity of the income and the applicant's financial capacity are assessed within the integrity of the file.
NIF and Portuguese Bank Account
The Portuguese tax number and bank account procedures required by the application are coordinated with the relevant Portuguese professionals and financial institutions.
Accommodation in Portugal
The lease agreement, ownership or other accommodation documents appropriate to the nature of the application are checked from a legal and file perspective.
Criminal Record and Personal Documents
The applicant's identity, marital status and criminal record documents, together with the necessary apostille and translation processes, are coordinated.
Application Petitions
The motivation letter, sponsorship or family-related statements and other necessary legal petitions are prepared according to the characteristics of the file.

AIMA and the Residence Card
The D7 visa is the first stage of the entry into Portugal and residence permit process. After entry into Portugal, the procedures before AIMA must be completed and the temporary residence permit obtained.
- Preparation of the AIMA file and document check
- Coordination of the appointment and application process
- Biometrics procedures
- Follow-up of the residence card
- Coordination of renewal and subsequent residence procedures
Under the general temporary residence regime, the residence permit is valid for two years at the first stage, and subsequent renewals can be made for periods of three years each. The current status and special conditions of the file are checked separately in each application.
Stay Requirement in Portugal
The temporary residence permit obtained through the D7 requires maintaining a genuine residence link with Portugal. As a general rule, without a justified reason, the holder of a temporary residence permit must not be outside Portugal for more than six consecutive months or more than eight months in total during the total validity period of the residence card.
In situations where these limits would be exceeded, the reason for the absence and the notification or exception options that may apply must be assessed separately before travel.
Can You Work in Portugal with the D7?
The main basis of a D7 application is the applicant's regular income structure, which allows them to support themselves without working in Portugal. However, foreigners who obtain a valid residence permit in Portugal generally have the right to engage in dependent or independent professional activity.
At the first stage of the application, rather than presenting active work income as the main source of income for the D7, the nature of the existing income structure must be explained accurately. In files where remote work income forms the basis of the application, the D8 visa is assessed separately.
Applying with a Spouse and Children
The D7 process can be planned together with the spouse and eligible family members. Depending on the family structure, documents on financial sufficiency, marital status, dependency and the family tie are prepared separately.
- Assessing the family tie and the income calculation in respect of the spouse or partner
- Checking the birth, custody and dependency documents for children
- Calculating the additional financial sufficiency required for the family
- Coordinating the apostille and translation processes
- Planning the AIMA and residence card procedures together with the family file
RAPO, Refusal and Delay Processes
If a D7 visa or residence file ends unfavorably, an additional document request is received, or the process is prolonged, the existing file and the grounds are examined separately.
- Assessing the file after RAPO and refusal
- Reviewing the grounds for refusal and the documents submitted
- Preparing additional explanations, petitions and supporting documents
- Assessing the status of delayed AIMA and residence procedures
- Where necessary, coordinating the administrative or judicial process with the authorized attorney in Portugal
