Short-Term Residence Permit

Determining the Residence Application Suitable for Your Purpose of Stay in Türkiye

The short-term residence permit is a type of residence permit that may be issued to foreign nationals who own real estate in Türkiye, stay for tourist purposes, have a commercial connection or the purpose of setting up a business, are receiving medical treatment, are conducting scientific research, or meet one of the other grounds specified in the legislation.

It is not enough to apply simply for a "short-term residence permit." The legal ground on which the purpose of stay in Türkiye is based must be correctly identified and supported with appropriate documents.

Canaydın Law Firm provides legal services in determining the appropriate application ground for a short-term residence permit, preparing initial, extension and transition applications, and following the administrative process.

The nature of the property, its ownership status and the applicant's current residence status are assessed separately before the application.

03 — Türkiye Digital Nomad Visa and Short-Term Residence Permit

For foreign nationals who work remotely for an employer or clients established outside Türkiye and who meet the conditions of the Digital Nomad program, a Digital Nomad Identification Certificate, a consular visa and, after entry into Türkiye, a short-term residence permit process may come into play.

This process is covered on a separate service page.

In the application, the information and documents supporting the commercial purpose and connection are assessed.

In the application, the health institution where the treatment will take place and the documents relating to the treatment process are assessed.

06 — Scientific Research

Depending on the nature of the research, the permission to be obtained from the relevant institution or organization, or documents showing the subject and purpose of the research, are assessed.

The application is assessed on the basis of the decision or request of the relevant authority and the characteristics of the file.

12 — Transition from Family Residence to Short-Term Residence

In certain cases, it may be possible to transition to a short-term residence permit after a family residence permit ends.

In particular, the possibility of transition is assessed separately in the following situations:

  • Divorce under certain conditions
  • Death of the sponsor
  • A child staying in Türkiye with a family residence permit turning 18

13 — Citizens of the TRNC and Other Short-Term Grounds

A short-term residence permit may also be issued for citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and for other foreign nationals specified separately in the legislation.

Basic Conditions of the Short-Term Residence Permit

Although the specific documents vary according to the ground of application, for a short-term residence permit in general:

  • The purpose of stay in Türkiye must be documented
  • The entry and legal stay conditions provided for in the legislation must be met
  • Suitable accommodation conditions must exist
  • The address where the applicant will stay in Türkiye must be declared
  • The necessary supporting documents must be submitted according to the nature of the application

Having a ground for application does not, by itself, mean that a residence permit will be granted. The applicant's general and special conditions are assessed together.

Initial, Extension and Transition Applications

Initial Application

The file is prepared by determining the legal stay status of the person who will obtain a residence permit in Türkiye for the first time and the ground on which they will apply for the short-term residence permit.

Extension Application

If the continuation of an existing short-term residence permit is requested, we check whether the ground for the permit and the application conditions continue to exist.

Transition Application

If the foreign national's purpose of stay in Türkiye or legal status changes, the possibility of transitioning from another type of residence permit to a short-term residence permit, or to another ground within the short-term permit, is assessed.
